U.S. Polo Assn., the official brand of the United States Polo Association (USPA), proudly outfitted 49 collegiate polo teams, of which 11 teams qualified to compete in the United States Polo Association’s Division I National Intercollegiate Championships. The final contenders in the Women’s Division included Texas A&M University, University of Virginia, University of Kentucky, Southern Methodist University, Cornell University, and University of South Carolina-Aiken, and the final contenders in the Men’s Division included the University of North Texas, University of Virginia, Texas A&M University, Cornell University, and Southern Methodist University. The 101st Annual Event was held at the Virginia Polo Center in Charlottesville, VA.

The most celebrated tournament for Division I Collegiate Polo in the United States included support from U.S. Polo Assn.’s nationwide Collegiate Partnership Program (CPP), available to all colleges and universities with a USPA-sanctioned collegiate polo team. Through the CPP, U.S. Polo Assn. provided student-athletes from a total of 30 colleges with complete game attire throughout the official 2022-2023 polo season. This is the fifth consecutive year for this program, where teams range from East to West Coast and include small private and large public institutions, as well as Ivy League and Historically Black Colleges or Universities (HBCUs).

The 2023 USPA Intercollegiate/Interscholastic (I/I) Program is dedicated to growing the sport of polo through future generations in the United States. For the second year in a row, the Women’s and Men’s Finals will be aired on ESPNU as an extension of the historic relationship with ESPN, which highlights the student-athletes and the sport of polo on a collegiate level.

“U.S. Polo Assn. is proud to once again support the National Intercollegiate Championship through the U.S. Polo Assn. Collegiate Partnership Program and to continue to bring awareness to the 101-year-old National Intercollegiate Program that serves so many student-athletes,” said J. Michael Prince, President and CEO of USPA Global Licensing, which manages the global, multi-billion-dollar U.S. Polo Assn. brand. “Not to mention, our ability to continue promoting the sport of polo at the collegiate and professional levels to sports fans around the world on ESPN platforms for the first time in the sport’s history.”

Support from U.S. Polo Assn.’s Collegiate Partnership Program includes customized performance team jerseys, white performance pants, polo shirts, caps, and equipment gear bags as well as a monetary donation for a total of 49 collegiate teams throughout the country. New to this year’s polo kit are USPA Pro items, the sports performance product line, which is uniquely designed in collaboration with professional polo players for the highest level of performance on the field.

“The Finals of the NIC represent the end to another great season of collegiate polo, and we are so proud of our student-athletes for their efforts this year. We also want to recognize the horses – our equine athlete partners make it all possible,” said Liz Brayboy, Chair of the USPA’s Intercollegiate/Interscholastic Committee. “We are incredibly fortunate to have the support of U.S. Polo Assn. for the fifth year in a row. In addition, the exposure our college polo teams receive on ESPN platforms is amazing for both the sport and our players.”

In addition, the 2023 Division II Women’s and Men’s National Intercollegiate Championship Finals were played on Sunday, April 2, with California Polytechnic State University winning the Women’s Division and Babson College bringing home the victory for the Men’s Division. The final contenders for the Women’s Division included University of Connecticut, Oklahoma State University, University of California Davis, and University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the final contenders for the Men’s Division included University of Kentucky, Stanford University, Texas Tech University, and California Polytechnic State University.

Bumper Study: More Than 70% of Public EV Charge Ports Are in America’s Wealthiest Counties

Bumper Study: More Than 70% of Public EV Charge Ports Are in America’s Wealthiest Counties

The study highlights existing disparities in EV charging infrastructure and emphasizes the importance of addressing these gaps in order to achieve the United States’ ambitious goals for EV adoption.

By 2030, the Biden Administration set a goal for 50% of all new-vehicle sales to be electric. A newly released study from Bumper, the go-to for low-cost vehicle history reports and a platform for buying, selling and owning a vehicle, shows electric vehicle charging stations and charge ports across the U.S. are in short supply, largely underscored by income and racial disparities.  More than 70% of public EV charge ports are in America’s wealthiest counties, and 96% are in majority-white counties.

Looking at a range of socioeconomic factors (see Methodology), Bumper found the following insights.

Key takeaways

  • States that fall within the highest per capita income have more chargers on average per 10,000 people. Nevada (499% more chargers than average), Colorado (339%), D.C. (337%), Vermont (336%) and California (316%) have the most chargers per 10,000 people.
  • The national average for charge ports per 10,000 people is 2.4, but 60% of counties with the lowest income have no EV chargers at all. The five states with the lowest income — Mississippi (0.71 chargers/10,000 people), Arkansas (1.24), Kentucky (0.71), Alabama (0.91) and Louisiana (0.46) — all have less than two chargers per 10,000 people.
  • Predominantly white communities have 3.03 charge ports per 10,000 people. That’s more than double the number of charge ports available to Black or African American counties and 2.7 times more than counties with an American Indian and Alaskan native majority.

“Many Americans hesitate buying an EV because of the initial upfront cost,” said Kerry Sherin, a Senior PR and data insights manager for Bumper. “For Americans living in socioeconomically distressed communities, they have the added concern of access to convenient EV charging stations. We hope our analysis will shine a light on the work that still needs to be done to make electric vehicle adoption an attainable goal for all Americans.”

Methodology

To determine county quintiles, Bumper created the Distressed County Index, determined by nine metrics of economic health and prosperity across counties in each state.

Bumper is using inter-state quartiles, comparing counties only within the same state on a quintile basis. The metrics used are from the American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year 2021 dataset and are as follows:

  • Percent of the population with no diploma
  • Percent of the population below the poverty level
  • Percent of the non-institutionalized civilian population without health insurance
  • Percent of occupied housing units without access to indoor plumbing
  • Percent of occupied housing units without access to a car
  • Percent of the population using SNAP benefits
  • Percentage of the population that is unemployed
  • Percent of vacant housing units
  • Per capita income (dollars)

For Bumper’s income analysis, it categorized into income quintiles all U.S. counties and county equivalents (such as parishes in Louisiana and boroughs in Alaska) based on per capita income. Bumper used inter-state quartiles, comparing counties only within the same state on a quintile basis.

Income group 1: ≥$35,331.20

Income group 2: <$35,331.20

Income group 3: <$31,076.20

Income group 4: <$28,088

Income group 5: <$24,824

Bumper then analyzed the counties that were home to 131,195 charge ports at 51,012 public, open EV stations, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Excludes Puerto Rico. Figures were current as of March 15, 2023. Per capita figures represent average number charge ports per 10,000 population.

Population was based using the members of the population who reported being only one race in the American Community Survey 5-year estimates by the U.S. Census.

BigHoops, an Atlanta-based startup, is building the first tech-infused, basketball-themed, entertainment dining experience based on one of the world’s most popular sports

BigHoops, Atlanta’s newest and hottest startup, emerged from stealth mode today to announce a pilot location in West Midtown Atlanta where they are testing their immersive basketball experience at a local Atlanta microbrewery ahead of plans to build their first full-scale entertainment restaurant in Atlanta in 2024.

The company placed a prototype machine at the Second Self Brewery in West Midtown in late 2022, and since then, over two thousand players have played BigHoops games, increasing foot traffic to the brewery and earning dozens of five-star Google Reviews.

At the core of the entertainment experience is the BigHoops machine, a four-axis machine that places the player on an immersive virtual basketball court with several addictive basketball-themed games to choose from.

While the player shoots balls from one end, the patented, robotic machine moves a full-size hoop (complete with screens and sounds) in three dimensions and spins to reveal either a standard-sized hoop or a larger “BigHoop”. AI technology adjusts the difficulty of the games to each player, allowing players of all skill levels to build social connections. The result is a fun, social basketball experience that broadens participation in the world’s most popular court sport.

“The goal was to create an addictive basketball game experience that anyone can play,” says founder and CEO Paul Brown. “The AI-driven system adapts to each player’s ability and levels the playing field, so even if you’re brand new to basketball, you’ll have a blast. We want to do to basketball what other entertainment brands have done for golf: democratize the sport and turn it into a fun, social experience.”

BigHoops was founded in late 2022 and raised their initial seed round of capital from Atlanta-based angel investors including CampbellKlein, a seed-stage high-tech fund with multiple successful investments from Silicon Valley to Atlanta.

“I’ve been coaching basketball forever,” says coach Derrick Mitchell, an award-winning high-school and college basketball coach, “and this is one of the most exciting things I’ve seen. It’s an awesome experience for everyone that comes in, for all ages and skill levels.”

The BigHoops team has assembled the technology, supply chain, real estate and restaurant competencies necessary to open their first full-scale location in Atlanta in 2024. The location will feature a dozen or more BigHoops machines providing immersive gaming experiences for all ages and skill levels. These will be accompanied by a huge sports bar, upscale restaurant, and other entertainment.

“We want to put the player in the game,” says Brown, “so they feel like they’re playing with their favorite team and their favorite players. It will be an unforgettable experience that keeps people coming back for more.”
