Over the past decade, we have seen a plethora of athletes dip under the 44 second barrier in the 400m. Everyone from Kirani James and LaShawn Merritt, to Akeem Bloomfield and Isaac Makawala. We also saw Michael Johnson’s world get taken down by Wayde Van Niekerk when he ran 43.03 at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Since 2016, we have seen Steven Gardiner take hold of the event winning silver behind Van Neikerk in 2017, World Championship Gold in 2019 and Olympic Gold in Tokyo last year.

As the 2022 World Championships in Eugene Oregon approach, the men’s 400m field has become even more competitive and there are a few guys looking to not only get onto the podium, but also potentially dethrone Gardiner as the reigning world Champion.

So let’s take a look at some of the guys who have good chances to medal in the 400m at the 2022 World Championships.
